University Seminars

Teacher educator programs rarely offer any training on how to be a student activity advisor. If activities are given any thought at all, it's usually assumed that educators can step into advisor roles using only the knowledge and experience that prepared them to be teachers. While that provides a good foundation, working with groups in a nonacademic setting requires very different skills and knowledge. Too often, educators who find themselves in the role of advisor to a student activity group have to sink or swim on their own.

For this reason, the Alliance is working to develop seminars for pre-service teachers and principals to help them understand the role of an activity advisor and the importance of student activities in education. Our first seminar is planned for future principals this fall at the University of Minnesota, and plans are in the works for developing seminars for future teachers.
